Participating Artist

Stefanie Schairer

Berlin, Germany

Stefanie Schairer is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, installation, performance, and socially engaged interventions in public space. Driven by curiosity and experimentation, she continuously explores new materials, processes, and artistic forms, allowing each project to develop through discovery and play.

Drawing inspiration from observations of human behaviour, social interactions, and everyday encounters, Schairer transforms personal and collective experiences into visual narratives. Her work combines colour, form, pattern, and materiality to create open-ended situations that invite reflection and participation.

Ambiguity plays a central role in her practice. By resisting fixed meanings, she creates space for individual interpretation, encouraging viewers to question assumptions, engage with multiple perspectives, and explore new ways of seeing. At the heart of her work is an interest in freedom, connection, and the transformative potential of artistic experience.

Artist Statement

SUMM SUMM SUMM
Happening / Socially Engaged Performance

In SUMM SUMM SUMM, Stefanie Schairer creates an open participatory environment in which visitors become active contributors to the work. The installation consists of numerous fly swatters and a video with an accompanying soundscape of human "buzzing," imagined fly voices combined with actions performed using fly swatters.

A simple instruction displayed in the space guides the experience:

"Please do something with the fly swatters. When you get tired, put them down again. Have fun!"

From this point onward, the structure remains entirely open. Visitors may choose to play, dance, construct objects, make sounds, observe others, or engage in spontaneous social interactions. Through these individual and collective actions, the audience becomes the co-author of the work, continuously shaping its form and atmosphere.

The installation transforms the exhibition space into a playful field of experimentation where sound, movement, participation, and social exchange converge. Rather than prescribing a specific outcome, the work invites curiosity, improvisation, and the possibility of unexpected encounters.

Originally presented as part of the Art Teleported exhibition at the CICA Museum, Gimpo, South Korea (2022), the project was developed during a period when physical presence and collective gathering were restricted. Its presentation within Underground Garden offers a renewed opportunity to activate the work through direct participation and shared experience.
