Artist Statement

For the Underground Garden, Olha Sharafanenko presents Ode to Bessarabia, a new series rooted in personal memory and reflections on Ukraine's fate, particularly her homeland in the Odesa region. Through atmospheric and melancholic landscapes, the works trace the quiet transformation of once-vibrant seaside settlements now marked by the realities of war.

Balancing beauty and loss, the series reflects on absence, displacement, and resilience. The abandoned coastlines become witnesses to a changing landscape, carrying the traces of landmines, explosions, and interrupted lives. In the context of Underground Garden, Ode to Bessarabia explores how memory persists within damaged environments and how places continue to hold stories of both fragility and endurance.
